Substance use remains a deeply concerning and challenging issue for many young people and their families. This webinar-format training will provide a deep understanding as to why adolescents use substances, and why these behaviors are particularly challenging from a neurological and developmental perspective.

We will discuss multiple evidence-based treatment approaches including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment-Based Family Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. We will also review both abstinence and harm-reduction approaches to treatment, and discuss the benefits and challenges of each mindset.

During the training, we will explore the links between substance use and intergenerational and historical trauma, Positive and Adverse Childhood Experiences (PACEs), and marginalized populations, with particular emphasis on the stigma and barriers to treatment experienced by individuals with intersecting challenges.

This training will also provide extensive information around ways to work with caregivers around youth substance use challenges and how to help family systems of all types when substances, codependency, and attachment ruptures are present.

We will come together as a community to explore ways to build connection to better support youth who are using substances.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe mental, emotional, and physiological indications of substance use
  2. Explain multiple interventions for working with youth who are using substance
  3. Utilize specific skills to work with caregivers of youth who are using substances
