“I Am One Degree” by Hanna Student Reilly

Two months ago after being selected to be a part of the 10,000 Degrees Program little did I know that it would change my life.

I got chosen for my great academics, on track to get through my A—G classes, and I was an upcoming junior.

10,000 Degrees mission statement is about achieving educational equity, and supporting students with need to access and complete their higher education, and to positively impact their communities and the world.

After attending the 10,000 Degrees summer intensive at Sonoma State University it changed my perspective on a lot of things. I honestly felt like a whole different person. It changed my perspective on life and approaching college. It also made me realize who I want to hangout with and succeed with. The other students I attended the summer intensive with were the kindest and over-all good people to be with. The 10,000 Degrees staff made me want to succeed even more with the laughs the positive energy and just the smiles I got to be around.

It truly is a blessing to be apart of 10,000 Degrees.

The intensive taught me a lot about colleges other than knowing what their reputation and the tuition. There is a lot more to college than those two items. Most importantly 10,000 Degrees taught me that I can truly be what I want to be and no one can stop me. I did not expect to see a whole lot
of people that come from serious and dangerous backgrounds. I thought I had it all bad myself, but I just need to appreciative to what I have now before it all disappears.

My motivation now is to be “one degree.” I have all the possible support I could get to become the successful young man I have been told I can be, so I am taking advantage of this moment and I WILL become a college graduate, I WILL get a lot of scholarships, I WILL come back and become a 10,000 Degree advisor, and I WILL be One Degree. Thank you!
