I used to believe there was no future for someone like me. But now I know that healing isn’t just possible—it’s mine. Hanna gave me the support I never thought I’d have.
Darrell F, Hanna Academy Class of 2025 Alumni
When Darrell arrived at Hanna Center, he was angry, withdrawn, and couldn’t sleep without the lights on. His life had been a series of disruptions: bouncing between relatives, shelters, and temporary guardianships. The idea of graduating high school, making friends, or benefiting from therapy seemed impossible.
But over his time at Hanna, Darrell’s life began to shift.
Finding Stability and Trust at Hanna
Darrell’s journey began with small steps like attending school regularly, practicing hygiene skills, and spending time with his peers. During each one of these steps, Hanna’s staff met him with consistency, patience, and compassion. From teachers to residential counselors, every adult in Darrell’s life showed up for him—day in and day out. One of his biggest turning points came in therapy. At first, Darrell didn’t engage. But when a staff member tailored their sessions around his interests—like cars and video games—he began to feel seen. And with that, healing began. He learned how to manage his emotions, express his needs, and start imagining a brighter future.
At Hanna, Darrell found more than a school or a place to live. He found a complete system of care: one that prioritized his safety, well-being, and potential.
New Passions, Big Milestones
As Darrell settled in, he discovered new talents and interests. He explored go-karting, agriculture, and cooking. He even helped his classmates understand difficult math concepts. He raised a sheep and proudly showed it at the county fair—earning both awards and a new sense of confidence.
Perhaps most striking was when Darrell stood onstage at Hanna’s annual gala and shared his story with 300 people. It was a moment no one—not even Darrell—could have envisioned just a few years earlier.
A Testament to Care—and Community
Last month, Darrell graduated from high school.
His story is a testament not just to his resilience, but to what is possible when a young person has access to a complete system of care: clinical support, education, recreation, community, and consistent, compassionate adults who never give up.
Darrell’s success is also a reflection of something bigger: the impact of those who believe in our mission. Because of Hanna’s donors, Darrell—and so many others—have a chance to dream again.
